The FDA approved the Viagra® (sildenafil citrate) trial in 2015, in order to assess the effectiveness of the product in helping men who are currently taking medications, especially if they have certain health problems, and to determine whether it is a safe and effective treatment option.
“Our study shows that there is a significant improvement in sexual desire and arousal, as well as improved erectile function,” said John H. Schulman, MD, from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. “We hope that this product will help improve patients’ lives in the near future.”
The trial involved over 12,000 men from the United States, Canada, Canada, Mexico, and Australia. The men who participated were recruited from public and private medical centers in the USA and Canada in March 2015. They took one tablet a day and asked to use Viagra Connect, a prescription medication that contains sildenafil, for about four weeks.
The men who received Viagra showed improvement in their desire for sexual activity, and they also reported a significantly improved erectile function.
“The benefit of the product was significant. Patients who took the medication reported improvement in their sexual desire for up to a month,” said Dr. Schulman. “The most significant improvement was in erectile function. We have not yet assessed the efficacy of the medication in this study, but we believe this benefit was significant.”
The study was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and was funded by Pfizer Inc. of Chicago, Illinois.
“As we continue to study the safety and efficacy of Viagra® (sildenafil citrate) as a treatment option for erectile dysfunction, our findings provide the FDA with new insights into Viagra® and how we can improve the quality of life for men who use the medication,” said Dr. H. Daniel Hevesin, MD, from the University of South Florida.
